Two maps of the journal Psihologija: A description of structure using a bibliometric technique

epartment of Psychology
Abstract: The structure of the journal Psihologija is described using the bibliometric technique of 'co-citation analysis' for cited journals. Two descriptions are presented: the first for the period of the former (i.e. 1981-91)and the second for the period of the present Yugoslavia (i.e. 1991-98). By comparison of these two periods, changes in the structure of Psihologija are discussed in relation to changes in the Yugoslav state. The bibliographic database 'SocioFakt' was used to collect journal citations that had appeared in articles published in Psihologija for each of the two periods. Subsequently, for each period, groups of 'closely-positioned' journals were determined by means of cluster analysis. Following on from this, a multidimensional-scaling technique was used to graphically represent clusters in the form of two-dimensional maps. Mapping thus showed the structure of Psihologija, separately for each period. Two major changes in the structure of Psihologija were established: (a) a strengthening of a clinical orientation and (b) the detachment and separate development of an experimental-cognitive orientation. The strengthening of a clinical orientation is interpreted in the context of social crisis, while detachment and separate development of an experimental-cognitive orientation has been explained as a result of the constantly growing quality and production of the Laboratory for Experimental Psychology of Department for Psychology in Belgrade.
